International World Parrot Trust

$139.00

Palm Cockatoo’s,( Probosciger Aterrimus ) lay only one egg every second year and have the lowest breeding success rate of any species of parrot in Australia. They are hunted in New Guinea for their plumage and are threatened by habitat destruction in their only Australian range the northern most region of Australia Cape York. The Palm has a large and complex vocal repertoire, including many whistles and even a "hello" call that sounds surprisingly human, there are distinct dialects throughout the species' range. There is anecdotal evidence of a palm cockatoo reaching 80 or 90 years of age although the oldest confirmed individual was aged 56 in London Zoo in 2000.
The male Palm Cockatoo subject of this portrait was a resident in the Adelaide Zoo situated in South Australia. He and his female partner were confiscated from bird smugglers many decades ago and for various reasons it was not deemed possible to return them to the wild.
