A baby kākā takes in the world. The touch of gold on her tummy happens in a small percentage of Zealandia’s kākā, often disappearing after their first adult moult. Perhaps these precious gold feathers hark back to the colour-morphs of kākā that were more prevalent until driven to extinction by collectors. I often keep the leg bands visible in my artworks because my husband and I are the ones who bandWe know many of these wild birds as individuals and take great delight following their lives and loves.
