"One of my great joys in life is meeting tiny kākā chicks when they're just 6 weeks old. They each have their own personality and are often very curious about the world like this wee one. To monitor the population and to conduct cognitive and behavioral research at Zealandia EcoSanctuary in Wellington, New Zealand, we band the nestlings a couple of weeks before fledging so that they can be identified uniquely at a distance as they go about their wild lives."
