Judi Lapsley Miller. New Zealand

Like all countries, New Zealand’s flora and fauna are imperiled by growing urbanisation, habitat loss, and climate change. I am fortunate to live in the capital city of Wellington – a green biophilic city where biodiversity is growing. The jewel in our crown is Zealandia EcoSanctuary, a reserve in the middle of Wellington surrounded by a predator-resistant fence where native wild birds can breed in freedom and in safety. Many of my images come about from my conservation volunteer work there, where I have the privilege of working with rare and endangered birds, including my beloved kākā parrots. They are my muse and feature in many of my artworks. I also love to travel and frequently visit Australia to meet as many parrots as possible! I am compelled to tell stories about our birds, and photo artistry is my medium. Photo artistry frees me from the constraints of pure nature photography and allows me to expose my interpretation of the inner world of others – their thoughts and feelings, their hopes and desires. These fanciful creations can be more tangible to the human viewer and engender empathy with other living creatures. Judi has exhibited widely in New Zealand and has curated many wildlife-themed exhibitions held at Zealandia EcoSanctuary. She hosts a weekly wildlife photography challenge to encourage others to use their photos and art for advocacy. Her photos have featured in books, scientific studies, and educational material.
